A Rich Man Took His Son To See What It Was Like To Be Poor, And This Is What Happened

A rich man took his son on a trip to countryside in order to show him how it looks like to be poor. They spent a couple of days on the farm with a very poor family.

Once the trip was over the father asked his son did he like it.  “It was great, Dad,” the son replied. “Did you see how poor people can be?” the father asked. “Oh Yeah,” he said.

When asked what he learned from the trip, the son replied:

“I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.” The boy’s father was taken aback by this answer! Then, the son added, “It showed me how poor we are.”

We often forget what we have and focus on the things we don’t have.  However, everything depends on one`s perspective and what is one person`s worthless object is another`s prize possession.

I am grateful for what I have, not jealous for what I don’t have.  The more I learn about where I am and understand what it is I want for my family, the better decision I am able to make as a husband and parent.

When I am fully aware of the way my decision affect other people, I am better to make ones which are good for my family, my community, my country, and even our planet. Sometimes it is a child`s perspective which reminds us what really matters.
