5 Ways You Didn’t Know You Could Use Himalayan Pink Salt Around the House
Many people have been replacing their common table salt with the Himalayan pink salt, a rock salt that is mined near the base of the Himalayas.
Although the main reason people started using Himalayan pink salt stems from nutrition, there are many other convenient and helpful ways you can use this mineral, ranging from cleaning to sickness prevention. This is why I’m going to show you the five best uses of Himalayan pink salt that you probably didn’t know about!
Although it may seem odd, Himalayan pink salt makes a great mouthwash, especially for people with sensitive gums or teeth who cannot use commercial mouthwash.
This is because it is an isotonic solution, meaning it contains the same minerals that are found in our body, and in equal concentrations. This means that it won’t irritate the mucous membrane of the mouth the same way typical mouth wash might. It has also been shown to soothe and heal mouth sores.
To make a Himalayan salt-mouthwash, add half of a teaspoon of finely granulated Himalayan pink salt to one cup of warm water and mix. Use it as you would use any other mouthwash.
The texture of Himalayan pink salt makes it perfect for unclogging drains. To make a Himalayan pink salt-based drain cleaner, pour one cup of the salt and half a cup of vinegar into a small bowl. Mix gently so that the salt soaks up the vinegar. You can also add a half a cup of lemon juice to the mixture to increase its acidity and cleaning properties.
You can pour this mixture directly into the clogged drain and let it sit for between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the severity of the clogging.
Himalayan pink salt works great for polishing silver dishware and cutlery. Start off by lining your sink, or a large serving platter, with aluminum foil. Add Himalayan pink salt and baking soda until the base of the aluminum foil is completely covered in a light layer.
Place all the silver dishware in the aluminum foil. Gently pour hot, steaming water over it (but not boiling hot). Let it sit for a maximum of five minutes. Remove the dishware with tongs and wipe them clean for the final touch.
Creating Himalayan salt barriers have been said to be effective at keeping ants out of the house, however there is another, more efficient method that is easy to prepare. You can do this by boiling water and adding finely ground Himalayan pink salt to it.
Stir the mixture, pour it into a spray bottle and apply it to any areas where you think may be infested with ants. Not only will this allow the salt to reach small cracks and crevices it wouldn’t be able to on its own, you also don’t have to watch out for lines of salt that you left laying around the house.
Prevents Infection and Soothes Throat
Gargling with Himalayan pink salt not only treats the symptoms of common infections, but it can also help prevent them. This is because Himalayan pink salt is great at absorbing moisture and fluids, so when you gargle with it the moisture found in the tissues of your throat is getting sucked out, taking the virus with it. On top of that it can also help sooth a scratchy, painful throat, making it both a preventative medicine and a treatment.
To make a Himalayan pink salt gargle, just mix half a tablespoon of finely ground Himalayan pink salt with one cup of warm water. Gargle for 10-15 seconds and spit.
There are probably many more uses for this amazing mineral that I didn’t go over, but it is still pretty clear that Himalayan pink salt is something incredibly convenient to have around the house.
