How Do Thyroid Hormones Cause Hair Loss?
First of all, in general, the hair follicles follow a natural cycle of hair growth and resting phases. But when changes in the body (hormonal imbalance) affect that cycle, it results in too much hair at resting phase, which means that not enough hair is susceptible to growth. Because hair growth depends on the proper functioning of the thyroid gland, abnormal levels of thyroid hormone produced by this gland can result in the changes in the hair growth. When there is too little of thyroid hormone being produced by your body, there can be hair loss, not just on the scalp, but anywhere on the body.
In 2008, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published evidence that human hair follicles are direct targets of thyroid hormones. This research also demonstrated that the thyroid hormones T4 and T3 modulate multiple hair biology parameters from cycling to pigmentation.
